Fraport Centralizes Airport Network Infrastructure Management with FNT Command

In the Success Story:

Frankfurt Airport operates a highly complex communications infrastructure that must remain available around the clock. Fraport uses FNT Command to centrally document, plan, and manage this infrastructure, creating a reliable foundation for efficient operations and rapid fault resolution.

The Success Story shows how FNT Command evolved from a cable documentation system into a central infrastructure management platform at Frankfurt Airport. Today, it provides transparency across cables, connections, network components, and dependencies while supporting planning, maintenance, and operational processes.

About Fraport

Fraport AG is one of the leading companies in the international airport business and operates Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s major aviation hubs. In addition to airport operations, the company is active in areas such as airport services, retail, real estate development, and infrastructure management.

Frankfurt Airport is a highly complex infrastructure environment spanning hundreds of buildings and a broad range of technical systems. Behind everyday airport operations lies an extensive communications infrastructure supporting everything from network connectivity and telephony to security, access control, baggage handling, and other operational services.

Managing this environment requires extremely high levels of availability and reliability. Fraport therefore relies on centralized infrastructure information and structured planning processes to support safe and efficient operations across the airport campus.

Fraport’s Journey to Centralized Airport Infrastructure Management

The Challenge of Managing Mission-Critical Airport Infrastructure

Frankfurt Airport relies on a highly diverse and complex IT and communications environment that supports flight operations, telecommunications, access control, surveillance, baggage handling, and many other critical services. These systems need to operate reliably around the clock, making infrastructure transparency and rapid access to accurate information essential.

With thousands of network components, buildings, cables, and connections spread across the airport campus, Fraport needed a central system capable of supporting both day-to-day operations and ongoing infrastructure expansion.

The Solution for Centralized Network and Cable Management

Fraport began working with FNT in 1998 when it replaced its former text-based cable documentation system. Over time, FNT Command developed into the airport’s central IT asset and infrastructure documentation platform.

Today, FNT Command supports cable and network planning, infrastructure documentation, order management, reporting, and integration with surrounding systems such as SAP and telecommunications platforms. Around 200 internal and external users access the system based on their individual roles.

What FNT Enables at Fraport

  • Central infrastructure documentation – one reliable source for network and cable information
  • Integrated planning – planned connections and required components can be checked before implementation
  • Faster fault resolution – affected cables, routes, and buildings can be identified quickly
  • Greater infrastructure transparency – dependencies and connections are available without on-site inspection
  • Connected processes – interfaces integrate FNT Command with systems such as SAP and telecommunications platforms
  • Support for external service providers – role-based access gives external personnel the information they need

The Impact of Greater Transparency and Faster Operations

FNT Command provides Fraport with a reliable foundation for planning and managing its communications infrastructure. Employees can retrieve infrastructure information directly from the system instead of having to inspect equipment on site, reducing travel time and improving planning efficiency.

In the event of a cable fault, Fraport can immediately determine where the cable is routed, which building is affected, and where it enters and exits cable ducts. This allows technicians and external on-call personnel to respond more quickly and resolve faults more efficiently.

Customer Perspective

“FNT Command is the central memory of our communications infrastructure and is among our 30 most critical airport IT systems.”

Klaus Schultz-Fademrecht,
